Tips To Stop Cat From Scratching

Scratching is one of those natural cat behaviors that many owners seem to find troublesome, especially when done to a corner of an expensive piece of furniture.  Fortunately there are many things you can do to prevent this from happening.

Cats scratch for many reasons.  Scratching provides them a way to groom their claws, and exercises and stretches their muscle.  Cats also scratch to mark their territory and communicate with other cats.

One of the easiest ways to prevent scratching is to get a good scratching post.  Most of these can be very cheap because they are made of cardboard.  More expensive ones are made of carpet.

Place these in places where the cat scratches normally like near or inf front of corners of furniture.

Another way to protect your furniture is with furniture protectors.  These are clear plastic forms that go around corners of furniture to protect them.

You can find these at most pet stores.

Another way to prevent scratching is to exercise your cat more, so they have less energy for scratching.

Play with them on a regular basis, or when you catch them scratching to tire them out.

Some cats have texture preferences.  Some cats like to scratch wood while others might prefer to scratch carpet or cardboard.

Whatever your cat’s preference you should get a scratching post make fo the same material.

One last thing to try is claw protectors.  These are little rubber tips that go over each of your cat’s claws.

This prevents them leaving marks when they are scratching.  The downside to this is that they tend to fall off and sometimes do not stay on very long.

As you can see there are lots of options to choose from when trying to stop your cat from scratching.
