Is Your Cat Peeing One The Furniture?
If your cat is peeing on the furniture it can be a very frustrating thing to deal with. I dealt with cats not using the litter box in a previous post, but in this post I’ll deal with the specific issue of cats urinating on furniture and what to do about it.
Cats can urinated on couches, beds, and tables for many reasons. Normally they are stressed out or just marking their territory.
Another reason is that they like the feel of the surface and therefore choose to urinate there and not in the litter box.
Some cats do have a texture preference and in some cases putting a piece of carpet in the litter box or changing the type of litter will often make the cat want to start using the litter box again.
Remember before you start looking into behavioral causes to rule out medical causes by having a physical exam done by your veterinarian.
Another thing to try is to change the location of the litter box, or to place an additional litter box.
Some people put litter boxes next to noisy washer and dryers, and then wonder why their cat wouldn’t want to use it!
Litter boxes should be placed in quiet areas where there is not much traffic, and they must be kept clean.
People not cleaning the litter box often enough is another big reason why you might suddenly find your cat peeing on your bed or couch.
If all else fails put your cat in one room of the house with a litter box until they learn how to use the litter box again. Only let them out after they have learned to use the litter box properly again.
Behaviors that have been happening for a while take longer to change so have patience. The longer your cat has been peeing on the bed the longer it will take it to stop.
You could also try putting plastic or something else on the bed so your cat will not like being on the bed.
