Domestic Cat Behavior
Domestic cat behavior is a very interesting subject to study. Cats, while they might seem to sleep all day actually exhibit some very interesting behavior. Even our cats that we spay, neuter, and declaw still exhibit most of the natural feline behavior we would expect to see, if there were wild cats out in the woods.
First of all, it is true that cats sleep most of the day. In fact cats can sleep up to 70% of each day. But don’t let this fool you.
You may think your cat is lazy, but they don’t become fully active until night. This stems back to their natural behavior. Cats tend to hunt in the early morning hours and late at night.
During the day, when the sun is the hottest, most animals rest and are only active during the cooler hours of the day.
Most of us know how active cats are at night. They will jump up on all the kitchen counters and roam through every area of the house looking for things to do and things to hunt.
Another interesting area of domestic cat behavior is the litter box. Cats bury their feces if they are either in the wild or at home.
This is because in the wild, cats need to bury their feces to cover up their tracks and protect themselves from predators. In your house, cats naturally continue this instinct.
Cats are very clean creatures and love to always groom themselves. In fact besides sleeping, their second biggest amount of time is spent grooming. Anyone who has had to clean up hairballs knows that this is true.
Cats always seem to amaze us by their abilities and talents. Spend some time observing your cat’s behavior and you will be amazed!
