Cat Does Not Want To Be Petted

Does your cat absolutely resist being petted?  Does your cat only want to be petted a little while and then leaves?  There are several possible causes as to why your cat does not want to be petted, and here are some techniques that you can use to try and change that.

Before we get to changing your cat’s behavior, let’s see if we can find out why your cat does not like to be petted.  Sometimes cats that grew up without human contact do not crave to be touched, and may even fear human contact depending on their past contact with humans.

Also some cat’s have a personality where they only tolerate a small amount of petting.  It has been shown that cats born to small litters do not like to be petted as much.

One of the main reasons for this problem is that owner simply has to high of expectations for the cat.  The owner wants the cat to allow petting whenever the owner feels like it.  Cats on the other hand often have little interest in pleasing humans so that is often the main issue.

Solution

Trying to change any behavior takes time and patience.  Slowly try to pet your cat for longer periods of time.  Also try to make petting more enjoyable for them by offering treats while you are petting them.

Basically you are trying to get the cat to associate treats and good feelings with the act of being petted.

In the end it mostly depends on your cat’s personality.  You have to accept the fact your cat only wants to be petted a little.  Remember there is nothing wrong with this, it is just the cat’s preference and is not a so called “behavior problem.”
